The short answer: light rain on cured concrete is fine. Heavy rain on fresh concrete is a serious problem. Everything in between depends on timing. - Rain within 30 minutes of finishing: Still very damaging. The bleed water hasn’t risen yet, and the surface is fully saturated. Expect surface defects at minimum.
- Rain at 1 to 2 hours: Risky. Initial set has started but the surface is still vulnerable. Light drizzle might not cause visible damage. A downpour will.
- Rain at 4+ hours: Much safer. The concrete has moved through initial set and the surface has hardened enough to resist light to moderate rain. Heavy, sustained rainfall can still cause issues on unprotected slabs.
- Rain at 24+ hours: Generally fine. At this point the concrete has enough strength that rain won’t damage the surface. In fact, moisture during curing is beneficial.
How Long Does Concrete Need to Cure Before Rain?
The general rule of thumb is 4 to 8 hours minimum before concrete can handle rain without surface damage. But that number shifts based on several factors.
In Florida’s summer heat (90F+), concrete sets faster. You might get away with 3 to 4 hours. In winter, when temperatures drop into the 50s overnight, initial set takes longer and the window of vulnerability stretches to 6 to 10 hours. Humidity plays a role too. High humidity slows evaporation from the surface, which actually helps curing but can extend the time before the surface hardens enough to resist rain impact.
The mix design matters. Higher-strength mixes (4,000+ PSI) with more cement paste tend to set faster. Mixes with fly ash or slag set slower. If your batch plant adds a retarder for workability in hot weather, that extends the vulnerability window. Ask your ready-mix supplier about the expected set time for your specific mix and plan around it.
What Is the 90-Minute Rule for Concrete?
The 90-minute rule refers to the working time of ready-mix concrete, not the rain window. Once concrete is batched (mixed with water at the plant), it should be placed within 90 minutes. After that, the mix begins to lose workability and strength. In hot weather, that window shrinks to 60 minutes or less.
This matters for rain planning because it affects scheduling. If you’re watching a storm on radar and decide to delay your pour by an hour, the trucks that are already loaded can’t just sit and wait. They either need to pour now or go back to the plant. That costs money. Concrete trucks charge standby time, and a returned load is a wasted load.
This is why checking the forecast closely and making the call early saves everyone time and money. If there’s a 60% chance of heavy rain during your pour window, postponing is almost always cheaper than dealing with a damaged slab.
How Many Hours Before Rain Can I Pour Concrete?
Work backward from the expected rain. If the forecast calls for rain at 3:00 PM, here’s the math:
- You need 4 to 6 hours of dry time after the pour finishes.
- Add the pour duration. A typical residential slab takes 2 to 4 hours to pump and finish.
- Add setup time. The pump needs 30 to 60 minutes to position, prime, and start flowing.
So if rain is expected at 3:00 PM, you need to start pumping by 7:00 to 8:00 AM at the latest. That gives you 3 hours to pump and finish, plus 4 to 5 hours of set time before rain hits. Tight, but workable if everything goes smoothly.

What Happens If It Rains 2 Hours After Pouring Concrete?
At the 2-hour mark, concrete is in a critical transition. Initial set is underway but the surface hasn’t fully hardened. What happens next depends on the rain intensity.
Light drizzle: Probably fine. The surface may show minor discoloration but structural integrity should be unaffected. Don’t try to rework or re-trowel the surface while it’s wet. Leave it alone and let it set.
Moderate rain: You’ll likely see some surface scaling, pitting, or a dusty/chalky surface layer after it dries. The concrete underneath is probably sound, but the top 1/8 to 1/4 inch may be compromised. A surface grinder or overlay might be needed later depending on the application.
Heavy downpour: This is where real damage happens. Standing water on 2-hour-old concrete will wash out cement paste from the surface. You’ll see aggregate exposure, cratering, and significant weakness in the top layer. On a decorative or exposed slab, this could mean tearing it out. On a slab that will be covered with flooring, a surface treatment might save it.
Can You Pour Concrete on Wet Ground?
Damp ground is fine. Standing water is not.
Concrete doesn’t bond to the ground underneath it on most applications. A properly prepared subgrade with compacted fill and, where specified, a vapor barrier handles moisture from below. Damp soil after overnight rain is not a problem as long as there are no puddles in the forms.
Standing water in the forms must be pumped out or drained before the pour. Water sitting under fresh concrete will rise through the slab as it cures, creating voids, weakening the bottom layer, and potentially causing settlement cracks.
If it rained heavily the night before your pour and the subgrade is saturated with standing water, delay the pour until the site drains. A few hours of Florida sun usually takes care of it. Trying to pour into puddles to save a day on the schedule will cost you far more in repairs.
Florida-Specific Rain and Concrete Tips
Florida has unique conditions that affect every pour:
- Afternoon thunderstorms are almost daily from June through September. Schedule pours for early morning. Start at first light if possible. Finish before noon. This is the single most important scheduling decision you’ll make during summer.
- Humidity helps curing. Florida’s 70 to 90% humidity means concrete retains moisture naturally, which is actually good for strength development. You may need less aggressive curing compound application than in dry climates.
- Heat accelerates set time. On a 95F day with direct sun, concrete can begin initial set in 60 to 90 minutes. That shortens your finishing window but also reduces the rain vulnerability window.
- Sandy soils drain fast. North Central Florida’s sandy subgrade is actually an advantage after rain. Water percolates through quickly, so a wet site in the morning can be pourworthy by midday.
- Keep plastic sheeting on the truck. Every pour crew in Florida should have 6-mil poly sheeting ready to deploy. If rain hits before the concrete has set, covering the slab immediately can prevent most surface damage.
When to Cancel a Concrete Pour
Cancel or reschedule when:
- There’s a greater than 50% chance of heavy rain during or within 4 hours after your pour window.
- Active thunderstorm warnings are in effect for your area. Lightning is a serious safety hazard on a jobsite full of steel rebar and metal equipment.
- The subgrade has standing water that can’t be drained before the trucks arrive.
- Sustained heavy rain is forecast to start within 2 hours of your expected finish time and you have no way to cover the slab.
Canceling a pour is never fun. You’ve coordinated the pump, the ready-mix, the finishing crew, and the schedule. But a damaged slab costs 5 to 10 times more than the rescheduling fees.
