How Does a Concrete Pump Work?
Every concrete pump runs the same cycle regardless of size. The mixer discharges into a hopper where an agitator keeps the concrete moving. Twin pumping cylinders alternate, one drawing concrete in while the other pushes its charge out, and a valve switches between them so the flow stays continuous rather than surging. From there the concrete travels a line of steel pipe and rubber hose to the discharge point.
The two machine types differ only in how that line reaches the pour. A boom pump is truck-mounted with an articulating arm that carries the line up and over obstacles. What Happens on Site, Step by Step?
Here’s the actual sequence, in order.
- You book, and we talk about access. Where’s the pour, where can the mixer sit, what’s between the two. This conversation decides whether the job wants a boom or a line pump, and most pour-day surprises get caught here instead of in the morning.
- We coordinate with your ready-mix supplier. Pour timing gets handled with the supplier directly so the trucks and the pump arrive together. A pump waiting on concrete costs you money, and concrete waiting on a pump is worse.
- We arrive ahead of schedule and set up. Position the pump, run the line, and be ready to pump when the first mixer pulls in. Setup on a boom pump means deploying outriggers on ground that will hold them. On a line pump it means laying the hose along the route we agreed.
- We prime the line. Before any concrete goes through, a cement-and-water slurry gets pushed down the line to coat the inside. Dry hose grabs aggregate and starts a blockage within a few feet. No primer fee, and no setup fee before the first yard.
- The pour runs. Concrete goes from hopper to form continuously while your finishing crew works behind the discharge. Mixer trucks cycle through as they arrive.
- Washout and cleanup. The line gets cleared and washed, and the pump gets cleaned before it leaves. Cleanup sits inside the hourly rate rather than appearing as a separate line item.
Does It Cost More to Pump Concrete?
More than chuting straight off the truck, yes. Less than the alternative on most jobs where chuting isn’t possible.
For residential work, a line pump runs $150 to $250 per hour with a minimum fee, and most residential pours finish inside the minimum. Billing is hourly with no fuel surcharges and no primer fees, and the bill matches the estimate.
The real comparison is pumping versus moving the same concrete by wheelbarrow, which takes a crew most of a day and risks the concrete stiffening before it’s placed. What Are the Disadvantages of Concrete Pumping?
A fair question, and the manufacturer pages skip it.
- It adds a trade to the schedule. One more company to book for the same morning.
- The mix has to suit the pump. Concrete going through a hose needs to be workable enough to move under pressure. Tell your supplier it’s being pumped when you order.
- Access still has limits. A boom pump needs firm ground and clearance for outriggers, and overhead power lines rule out some setups entirely.
- It’s a minimum-fee service. On a very small pour close to the truck, the minimum can outweigh the labor you’d save.
None of those are reasons to skip a pump on a job that needs one. They’re reasons to have the access conversation before the day.
What Can Go Wrong, and How Is It Avoided?
The common failure is a blockage: concrete jams in the line, the pump keeps making pressure, and nothing comes out. Clearing one means breaking the line at a coupling and digging it out by hand while a crew stands waiting and the trucks behind keep aging.
Most blockages trace to contaminated aggregate (a big rock in the pump mix, for instance), a low cement ratio, a long gap between mixer trucks, or a line that wasn’t primed properly. All of those are preventable before the first yard, which is why the mix conversation and the supplier coordination matter more than they sound like they should.
