Small Concrete Pump Trucks: When Less Is More

Start with Volume

How many cubic yards are you placing? For anything under 15 yards, a line pump is usually the right call. Between 15-30 yards, either a line pump or a small boom could work depending on access. Over 30 yards, a boom pump’s speed advantage starts saving you real money on labor and truck standby time.

Map Your Reach Requirements

Measure the distance from where the pump truck can realistically park to the farthest point of your pour. Don’t forget vertical distance if you’re going up. Add 10-15% buffer because the boom doesn’t reach its maximum in every direction from every setup point. If the pump needs to reach 80 feet and the boom is rated for 85, you’re cutting it dangerously close.

Check Site Access and Ground Conditions

Bigger boom trucks need more room. A large boom pump with full outrigger spread can require 30+ feet of width on stable ground. Florida’s sandy soils can be a problem, especially after rain. Going too small to save money. A line pump on a 40-yard pour will cost less per hour, but the pour takes three times as long. Your finisher crew is on the clock the entire time. Your ready-mix trucks are waiting in line. The “savings” on pump cost get eaten by labor and standby charges.
